This collaboration between Gabriel Orozco and The Skateroom elaborates on an image of one of Orozco’s most iconic works “Black Kites (1997)” which was originally conceived for Documenta X shortly after one of his lungs collapsed in 1996.

Making reference to the volatile period of civil unrest in France during May 1968 which began with a series of student occupation protests against capitalism, consumerism, American imperialism and traditional institutions.

Featuring a circular void cut from a stretched canvas, T=R=A=N=S (plane) by Cerith Wyn Evans directs the subtle play of light and shadow into an immaterial drawing on the wall behind, transforming the two-dimensional plane of a painting into a three dimensional work, joined in unity and conversation with its setting.

The original painting that is reproduced on these baby onesies depicts the execution of missionaries trained by the Société des Missions Etrangères de Paris, an institution that continues to educate aspiring evangelicals and enlist them in missions abroad.
