Painting 2010-2011
Published on the occasion of the exhibition that took place at Galerie Marian Goodman in Paris, this catalogue includes two abstract series by Gerhard Richter. Drawing inspiration from the book 1001 Arabian Nights – with titles like Ifrit and Perizade – the first one comprises 14 small format works made of lacquer behind glass and mounted on aluminum. The second are works from Richter's Strip Paintings, a large body of works where the artist explores the role of chance in the creative process.
Included in this book is an essay by Benjamin Buchloh, Painting Progress, Painting Loss, that analyzes the way the artist explores the status of contemporary painting. Thanks to the use of techniques like algorithms and digital printing, these works reach an almost scientific impartiality and celebrate the potential of new technologies in the field of visual arts.
